NOVEMBER 2008 NEWS

NEXT MEETING

Sunday 23rd November From 2 pm:

Film Show, 2009 Programme Planning and general natter
at Runcton Holme Social Club

Unfortunately, Andrew Ingram is unavailable to give a talk on the above date, so it was decided to use the date for showing DVDs, planning the itinerary for 2009 meetings. Also, use it for a general natter, etc. So bring any DVDs that you think other members might enjoy, bring along any new or part complete builds, etc. Also any ideas for meetings for next year (nothing too ambitious).

A few possible suggested repeat dates carried over from this year could be: Summer Test Track Running & Buffet At Runcton; Xmas Bash at Runcton; Running Day at Rickmansworth, Running day at Stamford East, Running Day at Norfolk Joint, Running Day at Wally & Carol's Garden Railway.

LAST MEETING

Sunday 12 October Running day on the Norfolk Joint Railway. 13 members attended. All NJR stock was given an airing, with additional visiting engines from David Atkinson. Also a chance to meet the feline equivalent of Thomas and Friends - a litter of kittens found on Streatham Station (Hope mum has been found). Thanks to J & J for their hospitality.

GCR GALA By Tony Sparks

Saturday and Sunday had the full gala timetable with freights and so forth. We had the best gala the GCR has ever had in 44 years of its existence. Well over 6 figures in income and possibly 5000 people there on each day. We jammed up Loughborough town centre and also Quorn village, with Rothley lanes coming a close second. There was not an inch of platform space either and we had to resort to pushing people inside to close the doors! The beer tent ran out 3 times and three ticket windows at Loughborough could not cope. Tornado's mail drops were just stunning and the yard area at Quorn was like a football crowd (but better behaved). Leander's maildrop was even more exciting and she stormed through making a real high-speed noisy spectacle of barking exhaust and long whistle. Just fabulous!

For a similar maildrop of nearly equal drama, see this link www.dapsites.com/pictures/videos.htm then get to the pictures and scroll down to (I think) the fourth one showing the Black 5 on a drop. Click the picture to get the video, and turn the sound up!

Regards Tony Sparks

SOME MUSINGS FROM TED TAYLOR

Greetings!

The Hunstanton Civic Society have just ended a two week exhibition in the only remaining building on the former Hunstanton Station complex. This is the former coal office.

The exhibition was the Lynn to Hunstanton Railway. It was absolutely superb with many photographs, maps and displayed items. I only discovered that it was on by accident. I do not purchase the Lynn News where it was in fact advertised. I would not wrap my fish & chips in that paper. Very sad that perhaps all Kloggies missed it. I have berated the organisers for their lack of publicity and have received a very contrite response. They promise to put it on again in the future and to properly address the publicity. I will keep you informed.

Thanks to the Heritage Railway article in respect of my days on the footplate at Longmoor, I am delighted to say that contact has been made with some of my colleagues of 49 years ago.

I purchase the occassional railway subject DVD but am invariably disappointed with either the content , the photography or both. Thanks to my long standing membership of the Friends of the Settle & Carlisle Line, my attention was drawn to Settle & Carlisle - Seasons of Steam. Published by PSOV at £14.95

If you only buy one railway DVD it must be this one. Absolutely magnificent. Worth the purchase price alone for Green Arrow stalling at Stainforth with a heavy train due to frozen sandboxes. Then, that magnificent locomotive is able to restart and carry on. I am biased 'cos we holiday regularly at Stainforth, but honestly. give yourself a treat. Buy this DVD. Even better if you buy from the FoSCL web site of course,

Kindest regards Ted Taylor

AUGUST 2008 NEWS

NEXT MEETING

Sunday 17 August:

Visit to Wally & Carol's outdoor 'Walgrove End' layout.

Essentially, it is an LNER based, 90 yard long, out and back line from garage to garden, 18 inches above ground level.

THURSDAY 23 JULY 2008 - FAMILY DAY AT RAF MARHAM

The Kloggies were invited by David and Sue Atkinson to watch the airshow from their back garden which is at the end of Marham's runway.

Just a handful of Kloggies joined some friends of David and Sue. The weather was dry, hot and quite breezy. Sue had laid on salad and bread to go with the Bar BQ'd food that quests brought

Among the items the RAF brought along to run were: The Red Arrows, The Red Devils (I think) parachute display team, Hunter Typoon, Tocano, a couple of Pitt Specials, a Glider and DH Chipmunk Tug, Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane from the BOB flight, Tornados, Solo Hawk and of course the Vulcan. As a finale, the vulcan flew over flanked by the two Tornados - what a wonderful sight.

When no aircraft were flying, David and Sue's scatty dog made sure we were not bored. Thanks must go to David and Sue for their kind hospitality.

LAST MEETING

Sunday 27 July - Test Track running and Buffet at Runcton Holme Social Club:

About 50 members and visitors attended. The weather was hot and humid, so the bar was kept busy all day.

Plenty of unusual locos and rolling stock, including a sweet tin on wheels. It was actually a tin in the shape of Mallard that a couple of the lads had put onto a rolling chassis. It went extremely well, in fact. did any one take a photo of it? Also spotted was a very nice railbus and steam railmotor.

As usual, there was plenty of food, and very tasty too.

Thanks once again, to Bob Pearman for organising the day, John Hobden for bringing the test track and last but not least, to Runcton Holme Social Club for their hospitality.

MEMORIES OF LONGMOOR MILITARY CAMP - BY TED TAYLOR

Like most people, my model railway activities are based upon nostalgia. In particular, my locomotive fleet reflects the various loco types that I worked on as a BR fireman. I guess that I spent more time on ex LMS Black Fives and 8Fs than any other type. Many months working coal trains between Bletchley and Willesden, having relieved crews from Rugby and beyond.

I have a Black Five in my fleet (Javelin kit) but do not have an 8F. At Kettering this year I purchased the David Andrews kit and then managed to persuade ace builder Graham Powell to build it for me. (It will then be weathered by Fred Lewis). Three cheers for the Yahoo 7mm egroup.

When I was a driver on the Longmoor Military Railway we had three 8Fs, 500/501/512. When I departed Longmoor and the Royal Engineers for the Royal Army Pay Corps I turned my back on railways. Most of the rest of my working life was with computer systems. I therefore had no idea of the fate of the three locos until reading the Wild Swan Publications LMS Locomotive Profiles no.8

I discovered that all three locos, WD500/501/512 had been purchased by British Railways and had been refurbished at Eastleigh becoming 48773/48774/48775.

501 was always my favourite so I decided that my model loco would become 48774.

Heritage Railway magazine have over recent months been running a feature written by Brian Sharpe on the final countdown of steam. There I discovered that 48773 and 48775 survived until the very end. Indeed, 48773 has been preserved and is currently at Highley on the Severn Valley Railway. But what of 48774?

Sadly it seems that she did not make it to the end. In an attempt to find out about 48774 I wrote to the NRM 'Search Engine'and to the editor of Heritage Railway. In both cases advising that 501/48774 was my favourite engine at Longmoor.

My request to Heritage Railway was passed on to Brian Sharpe who said that it was not known where 48774 finished up. Initially, ex Eastleigh she had been allocated to the Scottish Region, presumably 66A. I was staying in York for my weekend visit to the North York Moors Railway for their 2008 LNER Gala. I called in at the NRM where they remembered my email enquiry and handed me a photo copy of 48774 engine record card. This only showed that she had been transferred from the Scottish Region to the LM Region with no shed allocation details recorded.

Anyway. My Longmoor connection was passed by Brian Sharp to Geoff Courtney who is a senior staff writer at Heritage Railway and who had written a recent feature on the last Camp Commandant at Longmoor. He contacted me and said that he was interested in writing a follow up article on Longmoor and would I share some reminiscences. I did, and provided some photographs from my collection.

The end result is that the next edition of Heritage Railway, to be published on 31st July will contain the story.

Watch this space. Who said 'Everybody will have five minutes of fame' or similar.

Sunday 22 June: Running day at Peter Withers' Stamford East Layout: 12 members attended, with plenty of interesting stock. Pete has been busy adding yet more scenery to the additional bits. David Atkinson also brought along the Flying Scotsman model that is being issued to subscribers a bit each week. An enjoyable time was had by all. JUNE 2008 NEWS

NEXT MEETING

Sunday 22 June: Start 2PM

Running day at Peter Withers' Stamford East Layout.

NEXT MONTH:

TEST TRACK RUNNING AND BUFFET

Don't forget that the following meeting, on 27 July, is the Test Track Running and Buffet at Runcton Holme. Bob P says that he has only had five replies so far. If you are going please let Bob have your deposit as soon as possible. Otherwise he is threatening to cancel the event.

LAST MEETING

SUNDAY 25 MAY:

Visit to Barrie Walls' Wallsea Layout - report written by Roger Kingston in my absence (Thanks Rog). "Very good turnout - I won't mention which member phoned me in the morning as he'd forgotten where he was going! However the poor weather meant we were squeezed into the two railway rooms and it was particularly tight at Westwood where my field of view was somewhat restricted. However this did mean that the visitors HAD to get involved in operating with John (W-S) & Bob gaining a certificate of competence in Shedmastership at Westwood Loco dept! Others at Westwood were ably assisting Nigel (Goff) in shunting. The only observed faux pas was the arrival of a passenger train into the goods yard at Westwood. Best not tell Barrie as he's running out of blank "No1" Forms! And it's probably a 'totting-up' offence for me. It was good to see his 'new' F3 running, the first loco completed since Barrie's stroke, also progress on a C4 (ex GC 4-4-2) on his workbench. The rain did leave off during the refreshment break allowing us to partake beneath the gazebo. Thanks, as always to the ladies. I'm sure everyone enjoyed the day. I always do, but then I'm biased. There were several photographers present including David (Atkinson) and Richard (Sparks) so hopefully some photos will appear on the KLOGG website". Thanks once again to Barrie and Rose for their hospitality.

APRIL 2008 NEWS

NEXT MEETING

Sunday 27 April from 2 pm:

Running day at Norwich Thorpe layout. All Members wishing to go and for more information please telephone Roger Kingston.

LAST MEETING

Running day at Ken de-Groome's Rickmansworth layout: Fifteen people attended, including David and Mary Youngs, who run the Corner Shop. Nearly everyone brought something to run. Too much stock to list. It was nice to see something other than Met. stuff running on Metropolitan metals. Could that happen for real I wonder? Despite the weather, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. This event seems to be getting more and more popular as the years go by. You'll have to get a bigger shed, Ken.

PROPOSED OUTING TO THE BURE VALLEY RAILWAY

Neither John, Bob nor myself, have had much feedback regarding the above outing. The matter was raised at Sunday's meeting, and judging by the general consensus, there were only about eight members interested. A couple of people have written to me to say that as they live nearer to BVR than Runcton, they would prefer to meet at the BVR itself. So it was decided not to go ahead with the mini bus idea and to use cars instead. So if you want to attend and are willing to car-share, please let John Hobden know, who will then co-ordinate who goes with whom (details at the top of the newsletter), After that, we'll work out a meeting-up time. Thanks Ted for your efforts anyway.
